How California Taxpayers Reward Illegal Immigration
My latest California Post column looks at something California has been doing for years that deserves a lot more attention: using taxpayer dollars to help illegal immigrants pay for college.
And this is not just about letting someone enroll.
Over the last 25 years, Democrats in Sacramento have built out a whole system of financial assistance for illegal immigrants in higher education. One policy became another, and then another.
Today, illegal immigrants who cannot receive federal student aid may still qualify for California grants, tuition assistance, fee waivers and even state-backed student loans.
I get into the numbers in the column, including what illegal-immigrant students have received through just one of California’s public university systems.
It is not a small amount.
But the money is only part of what bothers me.
The bigger issue is what legal status is supposed to mean.
Millions of immigrants go through the legal process. They fill out the forms, pay the fees and wait — sometimes for years — because that is what the law requires.
California has spent years moving in the opposite direction, making it easier for people here illegally to receive benefits that taxpayers are financing.
At some point, you have to ask a pretty basic question:
Should following the law count for something?
