Double the Data for Maine Deer Spy

Same goal. Second half. We're in the second and final month of Deer Spy for the 2026 season and we need you to stay alert and active through part two! September is a beautiful time to be outdoors and turn wildlife watching into community science. From twins and triplets to solo does and a buck for good luck, every deer observation in Maine counts. Your last summer paddle, first fall hike, and all other outdoor adventures will be twice as much fun as a Deer Spy!

You watch the deer, and we'll crunch the numbers. Deal?

All you have to do is keep your eyes open for deer anywhere in Maine through September 30, then report any you spot using our quick and easy online form including:

Location
Date and time
The number of bucks, does, and fawns

Our biologists will take it from there. They'll compile and analyze Deer Spy observations alongside other datasets to learn about Maine's white-tailed deer population then apply appropriate management strategies for a healthy and sustainable population.

Photos aren't required to submit observations to Deer Spy, but participants often capture amazing moments. We'd love to share your favorite shots with future Deer Spies to highlight the rewarding nature of community science! If you capture a photo you'd like to see featured on MDIFW social media, please email them to our Social Media Coordinator.

Photos must be your own or photos you have permission to share.
Photos must be of deer in Maine, preferably taken during Deer Spy (August/September)
Please include the photographer's name so we can give appropriate credit!
Deer Spy doesn't use trail camera observations, so photos taken with your camera or phone are the best fit.

Remember, sharing your shot is an optional step two AFTER you submit your data to Deer spy through the online form.
