Dear AFGE Warriors,
I hope you had a reflective Labor Day weekend that allowed you to see the benefits of unions and building worker empowerment. The Women’s and Fair Practices Departments is honored to announce its very first Black Labor Week, a week dedicated to providing education and empowerment. These events are open to everyone interested in increasing their knowledge and awareness.
Our first annual Black Labor Week will kick off Monday, September 14 with a week of interactive and inspirational events. Our rich schedule of events are as follows:
Monday, September 14 from 7:30 – 9:30 PM EST: Black History: Race and Racism in American
Join us by traveling through time in a Black history musical journey from 1950s to present day. Tease your mind and test your knowledge on Black history glossary terms. Sit down, have a real and straight conversation with Bill Fletcher Jr. on Black History - Race and Racism in America today. Then, grab your dancing shoes and boogie with us in a virtual Happy Hour!
Tuesday, September 15th from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM EST: History of the Labor Movement in Connection with the Civil Rights Movement
The History of the Labor Movement and the Civil Rights Movement will cover the history of labor, black labor and the intersection with the Civil Rights Movement. The training will span from the emergence of the first large scale national union, the founding of AFGE, the civil rights era, and how the fight for labor rights and civil rights continue. We are honored to have Rev. James Lawson, Jr. join us as a panelist in a segment titled Then and Now. Please join us to get insight on what we have been through, what we are going through and how we can make it through.
Wednesday, September 16th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM EST: Protest to Policy
Once we take to the street, what’s next? Learn how to harness the energy of movements and transform it into true policy change. During such times, we cannot sit idly on the sidelines. Let’s make the change we are fighting for come into fruition. Join some great AFGE leaders on Wednesday, September 16th to gain the skills needed to be a great change maker.
Thursday, September 17th from 7:00 – 10:00 PM EST: The 2020 Census: Making Black Voices Count
As we near the deadlines set for the completion of the 2020 Census, this event will focus on educating our participants regarding what the Census is, why the Census is important, how the Census data is used for decision making matters that affect us all, especially communities of color, and when the Census deadlines are set for. We will be joined by AFGE’s Census Council 241 leadership representing Census workers and two special guests who have committed themselves and their work around making sure communities of color count in the 2020 Census. We will also be sharing an inspirational video from some of our very own AFGE kids that will empower us all to complete the 2020 Census and help shape their futures. We will close out the evening with some networking opportunities for our participants and enjoying our APRI family, DJ Buddha Brown on the 1s and 2s. Join us for the event and help us make sure that Black voices count in 2020!
Friday, September 18th from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM EST: The Power of the Black Vote
Friday, September 18, 2020 is not only a huge night for Black Labor Week, but it is National Black Voter Registration Day. It is only fitting that we are discussing the "Power of the Black Vote". This discussion will be centered around the need for Black voters in this election and the issues that are currently impacting Black voters. This is an issue based, non-partisan panel.
Please click the links above to register for events of interest. All trainings will be hosted on Hopin, an online conference platform. Instructions on how to use this platform will be shared prior to the scheduled events.
