Trump is coming for America’s wolves again. His new executive order, issued just before the long weekend, could lead to Endangered Species Act protections being stripped away from Mexican gray wolves and gray wolves across the country.

This would put wolves at risk of trophy hunts, trapping, aerial gunning, and other cruel tactics — threatening decades of hard-won progress toward bringing these animals back from the brink.
We’ve beaten back attempts to strip wolves of protection before, and we’re prepared to do it again.

Trump’s executive order calls for more support for the beef industry and singles out wolves as a threat to livestock operators.

But wolves account for only a minuscule fraction of unexpected cattle deaths.

Killing wolves — and taking away their Endangered Species Act protection — isn’t the answer. There are proven ways to reduce conflicts, and for decades the Center has promoted coexistence measures that help prevent livestock deaths while allowing wolves to survive and recover.

Yet Trump’s order calls for changes that could make killing them easier.

For Mexican gray wolves, who number just 317 in the wild in the United States, this could mean extinction. These endangered animals still face severe genetic challenges after being rescued from extinction by a captive-breeding program that began with just seven individuals.

They need more protection, not less. And we’re fighting for it.

This assault on wolves comes as the Center is facing pressure from every direction for standing up to this administration and defending wildlife, public lands, and our environmental laws.

We won't be intimidated. We've fought for these intelligent, social animals for decades, and we're prepared to go to court again if their safeguards are illegally stripped away.
