## Phil Jackson Gets Another Lakers Honor

That’s the number of wins Phil Jackson amassed as Lakers head coach from 1999 through 2011, the most in team history. The team announced Tuesday that it will unveil a statue of Jackson outside [Crypto.com]([link removed]) Arena during the second half of the season. Jackson won five NBA championships with Los Angeles and never missed the postseason. Before that, he led the Michael Jordan-era Bulls to six NBA titles. 

The Lakers have the most statues of former players at their arena of any team. Jackson’s statue will join those of other Lakers legends Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Pat Riley, Shaquille O’Neal, Elgin Baylor, and Kobe Bryant.

—NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar referring to the punishment the NBA handed down to Kawhi Leonard for his role in an alleged scheme to circumvent the league’s salary cap. Last week, the league [handed down bans ]([link removed])to Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and several team executives, fined Los Angeles $30 million, and took away five first-round draft picks. Leonard was fined $700,000. The punishment followed a yearlong league investigation that found the team set Leonard up with no-show endorsement deals with several companies to pay him off the books. After the decision, Leonard wrote, “I accept full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within my inner circle and regret the distraction this situation has caused the fans and my family."

In a post Tuesday to his Substack, Abdul-Jabbar, who won five of his six NBA titles at the crosstown Lakers, turned his focus on Leonard: “How exactly do you ‘accept full responsibility’ while still blaming the whole thing on ‘people within my inner circle?’ Leonard signed contracts with all those companies that were paying him money he wasn’t allowed.” He went on to speculate why Leonard’s punishment was relatively light: “What it comes down to is that the League seems to have negotiated with the players’ union to give Kawhi a slap on the wrist in exchange for the union not taking the case to arbitration.”
