John,

Republican Senator Roger Marshall just did something incumbents don't do when they're comfortable.

He attacked first.

On Friday, Marshall launched an attack ad against his Democratic challenger, Pastor Adam Hamilton. In Kansas. A state that hasn't sent a Democrat to the Senate in nearly a century, and that Donald Trump has carried by at least 14 points in every election he's run.

Nobody expected this race to be close.

Hamilton launched his campaign four months ago against long odds. He's not a career politician. He's a pastor who got into this race because, as he put it, people are frustrated.

Frustrated enough, apparently, that a Republican incumbent in one of the reddest states in the country now feels the need to go negative before Labor Day was even over.

That's not what a confident campaign looks like. That's what it looks like when internal polling starts telling a different story than the one you've been telling yourself.

A Republican senator in a state Trump won by 14 points just launched an attack ad against his Democratic opponent months before Election Day, the clearest sign yet that no seat is safe this cycle.

This is exactly why Building Blue exists to compete everywhere, not just in the handful of states everyone already expects to be close. Nobody was investing in Kansas a year ago. Now a Republican incumbent is running scared there.

Republicans thought Kansas was safe. They don't anymore.
