John--
As the 2020 election rapidly approaches, we as Morris County Democrats are called to do everything we can to protect our election infrastructure. One of the most vital roles we can play is to assure that every eligible voter who goes to vote at the polls on November 3 gets to cast a ballot. We know that Trump and the RNC have vowed to send 50,000 poll watchers to polling locations across the country and we fear that the intention is to intimidate voters. See, for example, this article. In Morris County we will be protecting each voter’s right to vote by placing challengers at all our polling locations. I am writing today to ask you to volunteer for this important job.
Even though every registered voter in NJ will be sent a mail-in ballot, we know that some people will still want or need to vote in person. The job of each challenger will simply be to assure that every voter who shows up gets to vote. (Issues with eligibility or location can be litigated later in court.) This is perhaps the single most important role we can play in the 2020 election.
Polls will be open from 6am-8pm on election day. There will be at least 1 polling location per town in Morris County. We will be dividing the day in half, so challenger shifts will go from 6a-1p and 1p-8p. This means that we will need somewhere from 78-100 volunteers. We will know more details on exact polling locations soon.
The requirements to be a challenger are minimal. You need to be a registered voter. In this year of the pandemic, challengers should be our members at lower risk of severe illness from Covid. You do not need to be a challenger in your own town. In fact, we expect that several challengers won’t work in their town. If you speak Spanish, we need you in Dover, Morristown and Parsippany.
If you can volunteer, please reach out to your municipal chair. Information available here: [link removed]. If your town doesn’t have a chair, or you are having trouble contacting your chair, please reach out to me (see below).
Everyone at the polling location will be required to wear a mask. See this interesting article for information on effectiveness of different types of masks. For additional PPE recommendations, please consult your personal physician.
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
