The headlines always talk about the same set of competitive, national races that will decide who controls Congress. And while those races are crucial for Democrats to win, there are plenty of races that have gone under the radar that will have just as much of an impact on the people who live there.

I could think of no other race that fits this description more than the race my friend Fred Wellman is running over in Missouri’s Second Congressional District.

I’ve known Fred for a long time. We’re both veterans of the Iraq War. We’ve seen the horrors of battle all too close. And we have continued our service by elevating the voices of veterans across the country through VoteVets.

All that is to say, I know that Fred is a fighter. He never gives up on the people he serves, and as a Congressman, he will be a fiercely loyal representative to the people of Missouri and make some noise.

But he’s facing a challenge that hasn’t been covered enough. While he’s building unprecedented grassroots support and running an incredible campaign, his opponent is one of the wealthiest and most well-connected people in Washington.

Her entire campaign has been well-funded by corporations and MAGA-aligned super PACs, and that’s not even counting what Trump’s personal super PAC will do to interfere in the race.
