Two companies crushed earnings the same day. Oil sank both anyway.
AI Capital / Macro Override
Dell Beat Earnings by 43%. Palo Alto Beat Too. Wall Street Sold Both — Because
of Oil in the Strait of Hormuz.
Neither earnings report had anything to do with a shipping lane 7,000 miles
away. The stock reaction didn't care.
Dell Technologies reported fiscal second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of
$7.04 on September 1, beating the $4.91 consensus estimate by more than 43%.
Revenue hit a record $46.97 billion, up 58% year over year, with AI-optimized
server revenue doubling to $16.4 billion and backlog climbing to $95 billion.
Dell raised its full-year AI server revenue target to $74 billion and its
adjusted EPS guidance to $25.50. Dell shares fell6.8% in regular trading that
same day.
Palo Alto Networks beat too: fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $3.41 billion,
up 34% year over year and above the $3.35 billion estimate, with adjusted EPS
of $1.02 topping the 98-cent consensus. Management guided fiscal 2027 revenue
and earnings both above Wall Street's existing estimates and announced an
acquisition of AI-native platform Console. Shares fell5.24% the same day.
Neither company's results explain the selloff. The cause sat somewhere else
entirely.
Rising oil, rising yields, and a hawkish Fed chair were all pulling in the
same direction against stocks.

🧠 Quick Quiz
What actually drove the selloff in Dell and Palo Alto shares on September 1?
A. Weak guidance from both companies
B. Renewed Hormuz tensions and a hawkish Fed, unrelated to either company
C. A cybersecurity breach at Palo Alto
✓ Answer: B. Renewed US-Iran hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz spiked oil,
reignited a global bond selloff, and compounded Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish
Jackson Hole tone — pulling the entire market lower regardless of what any
single company reported.
The mechanism reinforced itself: higher oil raised inflation expectations,
higher inflation expectations raised rate-hike odds, and higher rate-hike odds
pressured long-duration bonds into their worst stretch since 2006 — squeezing
exactly the rate-sensitive growth names, AI infrastructure included, that had
rallied hardest all year. Energy stocks were the session's only bright spot.
This is a different failure mode than the one behind Marvell's earnings-day
drop weeks earlier, where a single disappointing metric inside an otherwise
strong quarter did the damage. Here, nothing in either report was the problem.
The lesson for anyone reading a stock's reaction as a verdict on the business:
sometimes it is. Sometimes it's a verdict on an oil tanker route nobody at Dell
or Palo Alto has any control over.
