Happy Labor Day! I’m a proud union daughter. Today and every day, we honor the incredible labor movement that built our city and the workers who continue to make L.A. strong.

This week, we took action to clean up and secure nuisance properties citywide. We busted a major street takeover in Harbor Gateway. And we welcomed BTS and ARMY from around the world to Los Angeles. Read more about our work this week below, none of which would be possible without the community leaders and neighbors who work with us every day to move L.A. forward.

Cleaning and Securing Nuisance Properties Across Los Angeles

Angelenos should not have to live next to abandoned, blighted, or dangerous properties. While securing the legal authority to intervene has been a challenge in the City of Los Angeles for decades, my administration is driving solutions and taking action to clean these sites and hold property owners accountable.

City crews are hard at work cleaning and securing nuisance properties citywide, and I thank Councilmembers Adrin Nazarian and Tim McOsker for introducing two motions this week to accelerate clean up, intervene earlier, and strengthen enforcement tools. This summer, I also signed an ordinance led by Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez to significantly shorten the nuisance-abatement process and increase penalties for negligent property owners.

Since the end of last year, we have cleaned up more than 25 properties, including in Koreatown, West L.A., Melrose, Studio City, and Downtown Los Angeles. We will continue working together to deliver for Angelenos.

Combating Illegal Street Takeovers

Over the weekend, the LAPD Street Racing Task Force successfully shut down an illegal street takeover in Harbor Gateway, resulting in more than 65 arrests and hundreds of citations and impounds. I want to thank our LAPD officers for their swift and dedicated action to keep Angelenos and nearby businesses safe.

Let me be clear: there is zero tolerance for illegal street racing and street takeovers in Los Angeles. These are inherently dangerous and put the lives of drivers, spectators, and innocent bystanders at risk. We will continue to prioritize prevention, deterrence, and enforcement to protect Angelenos, businesses, and neighborhoods and ensure those involved face consequences. Since my first day in office, I have taken a comprehensive approach to public safety and prioritized the hiring of more police officers so Los Angeles has the resources it needs to lead important work like this.

New Community School Park in Boyle Heights

Under my administration, we’ve invested in our public spaces, creating new opportunities for neighbors to gather and kids to play. We just took another big step towards that goal by opening the first Community School Park in Boyle Heights with LAUSD Superintendent Andrés E. Chait, Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, and students, families, and community leaders.

Every child deserves a safe place to learn and play, and every neighborhood needs quality parks and recreational space for families. That's why my administration has prioritized this partnership with LAUSD and opened its 12th site! This new Community School Park will be open at Malabar Street Elementary School on the weekends from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Lineage Warehouse Cleanup in Boyle Heights

As of September 5, the food waste removal, power-washing, and disinfection of Freezer 1 have been completed by Lineage at their warehouse in Boyle Heights. Unfortunately, until the cleaning process is complete, odors may still be present in the community. Residents should continue to report odors and air quality concerns to 1-800-CUT-SMOG or at www.aqmd.gov/complaints.

I will continue doing everything in my authority to demand the answers and accountability this community deserves as we transition to long-term recovery. This week, I called ([link removed]) on Governor Gavin Newsom to sign two bills into law aimed at holding cold storage companies accountable. Together, we will enact stronger environmental justice policies and ensure a community-informed planning process.

Oceanwide Plaza Cleanup Continues

Graffiti removal continues at Oceanwide Plaza by the proposed buyer, part of my ongoing efforts to revitalize Downtown Los Angeles. Completing this project is about far more than finishing a building — it’s about restoring confidence, reconnecting a vital commercial corridor, and unlocking the economic potential of one of the city’s most strategic destinations ahead of a transformative decade for Los Angeles.

“Swim-ming” Into BTS Week

On Monday, I officially kicked off “BTS Week” in honor of BTS’ return to SoFi stadium for four sold-out shows. I was proud to celebrate this special moment with Councilmember John Lee, Councilmember Heather Hutt, and BIGHIT MUSIC Representatives Park Jong-wook and Han Jae-young. To mark the occasion, we lit up City Hall red, the color of BTS’s latest album “ARIRANG.”

BTS’ return is a powerful reminder of how music and the arts bring people together across cultures, while also bringing visitors, energy, and economic activity to Los Angeles and our local businesses.
