View in Browser <[link removed]> <[link removed]> Dear John, This Labor Day, I’ve been thinking about work. Not just my own, but yours too. I know many of you reading this work hard every day. You go to work, take care of your families, pay the bills, help your neighbors, build your communities, and keep going even when life throws something unexpected in your way. I understand that feeling. When I came to the United States in 1996, I arrived with two bags of clothes, a strong work ethic, and a dream of building a better life. I washed cars. I fried chicken at KFC. I repaired computers at a hotel. Those jobs eventually opened the door to a career in computer networking, cybersecurity, and compliance that has lasted nearly three decades. Later, my wife, our daughter, and I moved to Bay City, where we started a small family business raising heritage-breed pigs. The challenges I experienced as a small producer helped lead me into public service and eventually onto the Bay City City Council. And then, this year, work took on an entirely different meaning for me. In the middle of running for Texas Land Commissioner, I was diagnosed with leukemia. There were treatments, difficult days, uncertainty, and a campaign that did not simply disappear because I got sick. While receiving treatment at MD Anderson, I remained an active candidate and continued working regularly with my campaign team. Today, I am grateful to be in remission. That experience has reminded me that so many Texans are carrying things the rest of us may never see. Somebody working next to you may also be caring for a sick parent. Someone answering emails may be going through treatment. Someone working two jobs may be trying to keep their family afloat. Someone showing up every morning may have had one of the hardest nights of their life. And they still show up. That is something worth recognizing this Labor Day. There is dignity in work, whether you teach children, care for patients, work behind a counter, repair equipment, build our communities, work the land, run a small business, serve our veterans, or simply do whatever it takes to provide for the people you love. I have been a worker, an immigrant, a small-business owner, a rancher, a cybersecurity professional, a city councilman, a husband, a father, a cancer patient, and now a cancer survivor in remission. Every one of those experiences has shaped the person I am today. And as I continue my campaign for Texas Land Commissioner, I carry those experiences with me.
