It sounds like a ridiculous question. Yet in recent years, some schools have questioned whether Homer and other classical authors should still be taught...


....not because their works lack greatness, but because they are judged against modern ideological standards, such as whether it’s “inclusive, representative, or equitable” enough!


Unfortunately, those debates point to a troubling reality.

At a time when many schools are abandoning the great books, fewer Americans are encountering them firsthand. Instead, many receive only fragments, criticisms, adaptations, or secondhand interpretations.

Some never encounter these works at all! That loss really matters.


For nearly three thousand years, readers have followed Odysseus on his long journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces shipwrecks, monsters, temptations, loss, and years of hardship.


But The Odyssey is about far more than adventure.


It explores enduring questions about courage, loyalty, marriage, fatherhood, leadership, duty, and home—the very questions every generation must answer for itself.

That is why Hillsdale College seeks to place one of the greatest stories ever told directly before a new generation of Americans with a new FREE online course on The Odyssey.


Look, our goal is ambitious. We want to introduce at least 100,000 students, parents, teachers, and lifelong learners nationwide to Homer’s timeless story. We hope they’ll see the enduring lessons it teaches about courage, duty, loyalty, leadership, and home.

But we cannot accomplish this without your help.
