September 7, 1813

The United States gets its iconic nickname "Uncle Sam." This came after a meatpacker named Samuel Wilson supplied barrels of beef to the U.S. Army, which were stamped "U.S." Soldiers began referring to the provisions as coming from "Uncle Sam," and the name stuck as a symbol for the nation.

Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson (1767–1845) – A military hero and populist president, Andrew Jackson rose to national fame after leading American forces to a decisive victory against the British in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. Known as "Old Hickory" for his toughness, Jackson became the seventh President of the United States and ushered in an era of greater democracy, expanding suffrage, and challenging elite political institutions. He dismantled the Second Bank of the United States, faced down South Carolina in the Nullification Crisis, and supported westward expansion.

One of the most gripping stories from Andrew Jackson’s life occurred when he was just 13 years old and taken prisoner by the British during the Revolutionary War. A British officer ordered young Jackson to clean his boots; Jackson refused, saying he was a prisoner of war, not a servant. Enraged, the officer slashed Jackson across the face and hand with a saber—scars he carried for life. That moment shaped Jackson’s fierce hatred of the British and forged his unbreakable sense of defiance. Years later, as a general, Jackson crushed the British at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, a stunning victory that made him a national hero. He once famously declared, “I was born for the storm, and a calm does not suit me.”
