Since the pandemic began, we’ve hosted over 50 events, taking questions from Mississippians on a number of issues and things that matter most to them. And now, we’re getting ready for our first televised debate.
There’s just one problem: Our opponent, Confederate Cindy Hyde-Smith, has yet to accept any debate invitations.
This is puzzling to me. The clock is ticking on this debate invitation. Our opponent and I already debated once before in 2018, when I first ran for U.S. Senate — and she only had good things to say.
“I would not mind debating Mike Espy. I think he would be very civil.”
“I enjoy debates. I enjoy the conversation. I can hold my own any day of the week. I have a long record of proving that.”
“I want voters to hear everything we have to say... we’ve got a good message and we’re willing to put it out there.”
Well, if Confederate Cindy “enjoyed” debates so much in 2018, what is preventing her from accepting our debate invitation in 2020? Hyde-Smith should follow her own advice from just two years ago — or explain to Mississippians what has changed since then.
