This Labor Day weekend I’m in New Jersey, where I preached at a neighborhood chapel built by workers in South Trenton yesterday. St Bart’s is a Lutheran congregation founded by immigrants more than a century ago in a community where most of the immigrants speak Spanish today. It’s still a working class neighborhood. On food distribution days this year, congregants told me about how they’ve had to lock the doors and ring the church bell when masked men pull up outside in unmarked cars.
This evening, I’ll join St. Barts, Faith in New Jersey, and their coalition partners for The People’s Vigil outside Delaney Hall in Newark. The Save America Movement is deploying our Liberty Van to record stories of folks who’ve been in the cross-hairs of ICE but are organizing and building power anyway. Stay tuned to hear from them…
Meanwhile, our Gospel text yesterday was a passage from Matthew 18 where Jesus taught folks threatened daily by legions of soldiers to refuse to be victims and reclaim the moral power of community. I was glad for the chance to preach the text at St Barts and am grateful to be able to share it with you here.
Class is back in session for us at the Center for Public Theology and Public Policy this week. Even on his way back to campus, Bishop Barber is still organizing marches to the polls.
