Friend,

Labor Day exists because working people organized, asked for a day of their
own, and the country eventually agreed they'd earned it. More than a century
later, I think that instinct still holds up. We set aside the first Monday in
September to say out loud that the work matters and so do the people doing it.

Around here that means the line at the plant in Austin and the shop floor in
Owatonna. It also includes the farmers who will be out in the field this week,
or the folks who opened their storefronts this morning the same as any other
Monday, because when you own the place, there's nobody else to do it.

Plenty of people are on the clock today without much notice taken. The nurses
working the floor at the hospital and the line crews keeping the power on so
the rest of us can grill in the backyard and let the kids wear themselves out
until dark.

When I'm fighting for our district in Washington, these are the people I'm
picturing. They built this part of the state and they keep it running, and they
don't spend much time asking for credit.

I hope you get a good day out of it, and some time with the people you love.
