Email from Citizens to Elect Allison Russo friend, this Labor Day weekend, I’m proud to stand in solidarity with working men and women across Ohio and honor how the labor movement has helped build the middle class in our state. Like many Ohioans, ties to labor unions run deep for me, and I’ve never forgotten the opportunity a union job gave my family. During the earliest years of my childhood, my mother was a single mom, barely out of high school, and working hard to take care of two little girls. I watched my mom work tirelessly to try to make ends meet, from taking shifts at the convenience store to cleaning homes and office buildings. But when she finally got an opportunity to get workforce training through a local trade union, it changed the trajectory of my family’s life. My mom became a proud union carpenter, and for the first time, she had a stable income and benefits. She could more easily pay the bills. She bought our first home and went on to earn a college degree. Being in a union unlocked so many opportunities for our family, and I’ve never forgotten this. Now, I’ve dedicated my career to ensuring that every family has access to the same life-changing opportunities we did. Labor Day is a celebration of the labor movement and a reminder that the fight for fair elections and voting rights are a fundamental part of workers’ rights. As your next Secretary of State, I will always stand strong for secure and accessible elections for every single Ohio worker.
