A new voice has joined the fight for the York 9!

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is calling on York University to immediately retire the nine rhesus macaques at the center of LCA’s undercover investigation, transfer them to an appropriate sanctuary, and move beyond animal research.

In a statement issued on Sept 2nd, ([link removed]) the Jane Goodall Institute said it was “deeply troubled” by the conditions and treatment of the York 9 documented in LCA’s investigation and called for an end to invasive experimentation involving primates.

Dr. Jane Goodall spent her life teaching the world that animals deserve compassion, respect, and protection. Her opposition to invasive experimentation on primates was unwavering.

Now, the organization she founded is carrying her legacy forward and telling York University that these nine macaques deserve better.

LCA’s undercover investigation, released in April, documented the suffering of Hannah, Liesl, Mini-Sass, Olivia, Virginia, Do, Kenny, Bento, and Magneto - the nine macaques collectively known as the “York 9.”

An LCA investigator spent nine months working inside York University’s Behavioral Sciences Building as a Laboratory Animal Attendant, caring for the animals. The investigation documented prolonged confinement, social isolation, invasive procedures, repeated surgeries, restraint, signs of distress and abnormal behavior, and injuries associated with research procedures.

Most of the macaques have spent more than 17 years inside the laboratory.

Since LCA released our investigation, supporters and activists have refused to let York University ignore what is happening inside its laboratories. Monthly protests have continued at the university, and thousands of LCA supporters have demanded answers and action.

Now, with JGI publicly calling for the York 9 to be retired and moved to a sanctuary, the pressure on York University is stronger than ever.
