Happy Labor Day:

Like a lot of people, for most of my life Labor Day was another holiday, a Monday off and a good excuse to grill, have a beer, and spend time with family and friends.

But as I get older, I think more about what Labor Day really means.

My dad drove truck. My mom was a secretary. They worked hard, and I saw what that work provided for our family: a home where I felt safe, where I knew I belonged, and where I could always come back.

They also taught me that hard work could open doors.

That lesson was one I learned over and over again. I started playing football in middle school, eventually earned the chance to attend college and play at the University of Wisconsin, something I’d never imagined for myself. I carried the work ethic I learned there into law school and, ultimately, into my career.

Hard work has given me opportunities I never could have imagined growing up.

But on this Labor Day, I don’t know that someone starting out today can follow the same path. It would certainly be harder.

Too many people are working just as hard, sometimes harder, and still can't afford the home, education, healthcare, or basic security that previous generations were able to afford through their work.

I think hard work should still lead somewhere.

That's one of the biggest reasons I'm running for State Senate. I want Wisconsin to reward the employee who works hard, the small business owner who takes a risk, and the family simply trying to build a secure life.
