John,
After a 25 day vacation, the Senate is finally preparing to do something about the economic crisis that Americans are facing in the wake of our utter failure to manage the COVID pandemic.
Unfortunately, the bill Mitch McConnell is bringing to the Senate floor isn’t up to the task. The “skinny” bill has only half as much unemployment assistance as the CARES Act, enacted in March, or the HEROES Act, which the House passed in May.
And most importantly, it does NOTHING to push back on Donald Trump’s attempt to defund our Social Security system! We’re fighting back!
Congress MUST act to overturn Trump’s raid on Social Security. We’re keeping the pressure on! Chip in $7 to save Social Security from Donald Trump!
Right now, Democrats have a bill that would protect our Social Security contributions from Trump's scheme. But there’s also a Republican bill, introduced by Sen. Steve Daines of Montana, that would codify Trump’s raid of our Social Security contributions into law. Either one could make it into a final Senate package―it’s up to us to make sure that Congress acts to protect Social Security, not enable Trump!
Remember: Congress rejected Trump’s scheme to raid Social Security earlier this year. Even Republican Senators Chuck Grassley and Rand Paul said it was a bad idea. But Trump acted unilaterally, claiming the power to defund Social Security indefinitely, without Congressional involvement.
If Trump is re-elected, he’s already indicated that he’ll keep deferring the payroll tax until he completely empties the trust fund. We have to stop him NOW!
Social Security Works is activating all of our allies on Capitol Hill to ensure that the Senate bill doesn’t endanger Social Security further. Chip in $7 today!
Together, we’re going to save Social Security from Donald Trump.
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
