Yesterday, Democracy Now! interviewed filmmaker Yoruba Richen, who directed and produced The Killing of Breonna Taylor, the just released New York Times documentary about Breonna Taylor’s life and death. Police officers in Louisville, Kentucky fatally shot Taylor, a 26-year-old Black emergency room technician, in her own home in March. The police officers responsible for her death have not been charged.

Richen, a former Democracy Now! producer, heads the documentary program at the CUNY Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. She said of Taylor's murder, "I personally felt the trauma that we endure as African American people when we hear and see another killing, another police killing—which is nothing new. It’s happened for generations and generations and generations. And it’s a trauma that we have in our community ... and that we have as a people."

Last week we spoke with Yale philosopher Jason Stanley, a scholar of propaganda and author of the book How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them, about President Trump's open embrace of the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon and promotion of “law and order” while refusing to condemn his armed followers who target—and sometimes kill—antiracist protesters.

“Fascism is a cult of the leader who promises national restoration in the face of supposed threats by leftist radicals, minorities and immigrants. He promises only he can save us,” Stanley said. “In the RNC, what we saw is a cult of the leader.”
If you think hearing from scholars like Jason Stanley is essential in these troubled times, please sign up as a monthly contributor today. ([link removed])

As climate-fueled wildfires continued to rage across the State of California, Democracy Now! interviewed Rasheed Lockheart about California's reliance on prison labor to fight fires. Lockheart was a firefighter at San Quentin State Prison until his release in January.

"You have 600 less firefighters this year [due to COVID-19], and we’re facing some of the largest wildfires that we’ve ever had in the state. These guys are out 24, 48 hours at a time. They're being overworked, and for a dollar an hour. It’s a little bit of a human tragedy. They’re battling COVID-19, and they’re battling wildfires at the same time," Lockheart explained.
