John, I’m in a bit of a bind.

A recent poll shows that our race is now statistically tied, and the Senate GOP’s top super PACs are currently outspending us to boost my Republican opponent. That’s because Senate control hinges on this battleground race.

Now, my decision to run for Senate wasn’t made lightly. 

Serving as Governor was one of the great experiences of my life, but after my second term, I was ready to hang up my suit and tie. From adding hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs to giving school teachers much-needed raises to expanding access to Medicaid, my #1 priority was to improve the lives of everyday people – and we did that.

That’s why it’s so upsetting to see how Washington DC insiders have turned their backs on hardworking people. Insiders like Michael Whatley, my opponent in this race.

My opponent says he’ll lower costs, but he built his career promoting the interests of Big Oil and utility companies at the expense of working families. He says he’ll protect our communities, but as chair of the state GOP, he appointed a convicted child sex offender who served six years in prison to powerful leadership roles within the party because he could raise money. He claims he’ll fight for North Carolinians, but it’s clear that his priority is choosing himself and his wealthy friends.

It’s no wonder why the President anointed him to run after Thom Tillis bowed out of running for this seat.

So while I didn’t plan to go to Washington DC, I couldn’t stand by and watch the GOP rip away health care access, gut resources for public education and chip away at the middle class. They are not making this country “great again.”

I had to get back in the fight, and I’m so glad I did.

Ever since launching this campaign, hundreds of thousands of folks like you have joined our grassroots movement for change, and momentum is on our side. 

The hard part will be maintaining it for the next nine weeks or so left in this race.

Republicans are spending nearly $100 million so far to turn voters against me and save their Senate majority – and this surge of dark money is taking a toll on our narrow polling lead. 

We can fight back and win in North Carolina, but just as in elections past, I can’t do it alone.

Please, John – will you chip in what you can today to help me flip this seat, retake the Senate for Democrats and return power in Washington DC to the hands of working families?
