Friends, I know you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? Donald Trump and minerals — sounds about as harmless as a rock. It isn’t. Trump built his career calling himself a dealmaker, and these days the only deals he’s doing are the ones that make him and his family richer. My office started digging after two separate stories on mineral mining broke this month. The New York Times uncovered a set of pending federal deals with 14 companies, every one of them tied to Trump or his allies, worth more than $8.9 billion in taxpayer funding. ProPublica published the second piece: a $620 million Pentagon loan to a company connected to Donald Trump Jr., pushed through last year after the White House personally intervened to speed it along. Fourteen mineral mining companies. $8.9 billion. A $620 million loan to the president’s own son. This is real money, moved on purpose, to companies that happen to know the president personally. Call it what it is: corruption, plain and simple. I’ve spent enough years gathering evidence as a prosecutor, House member, and now Senator to know a pattern when I see one: Trump using the machinery of government to enrich his family while the taxpayers cover the bill. That’s why I’m demanding answers. But the only real check on a president who won’t hold himself accountable is a Congress that will, and that means winning back a Democratic Senate majority.
