The Alcohol Policy Resource Center at Prevention First provides training, education, resources, and tools on evidence-based alcohol policy strategies to municipalities, local officials, law enforcement, and community coalitions focused on underage drinking in communities throughout Illinois. Mission Helping communities reduce underage drinking and alcohol misuse. Goal To reduce alcohol use among those who are 12-25 years old in communities throughout Illinois. COVID-19 and Home Delivery of Alcohol The APRC has their eyes on alcohol and how COVID-19 continues to expand the industry’s reach. All across the country, prevention providers are sharing concerns about food delivery apps and home delivery of alcohol fueling alcohol sales to minors. In fact, The Washington Post published an article on May 8th entitled ‘Food Delivery Apps Fueled Alcohol Sales to Minors, California Regulators Find’. They found after interviewing the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, compliance checks had been done showing an 80% failure rate for delivery apps. This article went on to say many apps rely on ID scanning which we also know is problematic. Exclusively using ID scanning tools does not detect fake ID's - it merely reads the false information on the front of the card. We hope that when Compliance Checks can be implemented safely, home delivery checks are an addition to the detail. Changing Landscape of Alcohol Has the alcohol landscape in your area changed due to COVID-19? Have grocery and convenience stores moved alcohol to a more prominent location within their store? Have they increased the number of aisles and displays containing alcohol? Conducting an Alcohol Environmental Scan can help answer those questions. The goal of environmental scanning is to identify your community’s risk factors that can contribute to underage or excessive alcohol consumption. Conducting a scan allows you to observe and document the 4 P’s: Price, Product, Promotion, and Place. Documenting these observations and pairing that information with other assessment data, such as youth survey data, allows you to create a clear picture of alcohol in your community. Share your youth survey data with store managers – many are not aware of use rates nor the potential risk for easy access. The APRC has a free downloadable Environmental Scanning Fact Sheet and Infographic. A micro-learning video on how to conduct an Environmental Scan is featured below. Finally, if you would like Technical Assistance, the APRC is here for you. We can provide assistance on how to conduct an Alcohol Environmental Scan as well as how to package your data to share with retail merchants. Featured Resource Coalition Partnerships Do your coalition membership lists feel stagnant? Over the next few months the APRC will share potential partnerships your coalition can explore. This includes the Alcohol Policy Resource Center at Prevention First. We would love to hear more about your coalition and how we can be of assistance. Please let us know when your coalition meetings are and how we can connect virtually. The APRC at Prevention First would love to hear from you!
