Inside Elections just moved New Hampshire’s Senate race from Tilt
Democratic to Toss-up.

This is the first race rater this cycle to put us in Toss-up territory.
And I need you to understand what that means and how we got here.

Let me tell you what a Toss-up rating means in plain English: The people
whose entire job is to watch and analyze Senate races for a living are now
saying this race could go either way.

Not probably Democratic. Not leaning our way. A coin flip.

And here’s what’s making me sick: This didn’t happen overnight. This race
has been sliding.

Earlier this cycle Chris Pappas was ahead. Not by a lot — this has always
been a margin-of-error race — but he was ahead. Then the Republican money
started hitting the airwaves. More than thirty million dollars in outside
spending against us, us without enough money to fight back, and the polls
started moving.

The most recent UNH Granite State Poll showed Sununu ahead for the first
time this entire campaign — 45 to 43. A five-point swing in the wrong
direction.

And now Inside Elections has seen enough to move us to Toss-up.

I’ve been warning about this for months. I warned you that New Hampshire
was being ignored while money poured into other races. I warned you that
John Sununu was a uniquely dangerous opponent with the name, the money,
and a Republican machine that had decided New Hampshire was their best
shot at keeping the Senate. I warned you that unanswered spending moves
voters.

All of it is happening. Right now. In real time.

Here’s what I need you to understand: Inside Elections doesn’t move a race
to Toss-up for fun. They move it because the dynamics have shifted. And
they’ve shifted because more than $30 million in Republican outside
spending has gone largely unanswered while everyone’s eyes were on other
races.

That ends now — or this race keeps moving in the wrong direction.

Chris Pappas has won the toughest district in New Hampshire four times. He
knows how to reach voters across the aisle and build a coalition that
wins. But he cannot fight off $30 million in Republican outside spending
without grassroots supporters showing up right now before this race slides
any further.

There is no path to winning back the Senate majority without holding onto
New Hampshire’s Senate seat. None. If Chris Pappas loses this seat,
Democrats’ chances are dead in the water.

The race raters just told you this is a Toss-up. The polls are telling you
the trend is moving the wrong way. I’m telling you the window to turn this
around and win back the Senate is open — but it will not stay open.
