HPE’s Networking Business Is Doing the Heavy Lifting
HPE reported the best quarter in its history on Wednesday, September 2, 2026,
and the stock sold off anyway. That reaction is worth understanding before
dismissing it as noise.
HPE reported record fiscal Q3 2026 results with revenue of $12.2 billion, up
34% year-over-year, and record non-GAAP operating profit of about $2.0 billion.
Non-GAAP EPS hit $1.11, and it topped the Street’s consensus by a wide margin.
Orders also grew 42% year-over-year on a normalized basis, outpacing revenue
and contributing to a record company backlog that management says improves
visibility.
Two Businesses, One Stock Price
The real argument for HPE right now is not the server line. It is the
networking franchise that is now reported in a combined Networking segment
alongside the acquired Juniper business.
The Networking segment generated $2.9 billion in revenue and delivered a 22%
operating profit margin in Q3. Compare that to the Cloud and AI segment, where
operating margin was 17.0%, up 460 basis points sequentially. That is
respectable, but it is also the part of the portfolio most exposed to pricing
and mix swings as AI systems scale.
On the call, management said networks-for-AI demand accelerated, with orders
reaching $700 million in Q3 and $2.2 billion cumulatively, prompting HPE to
raise its fiscal 2026 target to between $2.5 billion and $3.0 billion. HPE also
announced an expanded collaboration with Oracle covering Juniper routing and
switching platforms, software, and AI operations capabilities for Oracle’s AI
cloud infrastructure build-out. CEO Antonio Neri described it as a multi-year,
multi-gigawatt opportunity. That deal matters beyond the press release. Oracle
deploying Juniper hardware at gigawatt scale is the kind of anchor relationship
that can compound over time if execution holds.
Why Wall Street Sold the News
Despite the beat and the raised outlook, HPE shares fell in after-hours
trading following the release, and the stock was down again during Thursday’s
regular session on September 3, 2026. The market’s hesitation appears tied to
sustainability questions, especially how quickly a record backlog turns into
revenue and what happens to margins as product mix shifts.
Management acknowledged the margin dynamic on the call. Going forward, the
company expects gross margin to moderate toward more historical levels, driven
by the growth in AI systems and the normalization in traditional servers,
offset by the growing mix of networking. That last clause is the bullish
clause. If networking keeps growing into the margin base, the moderation in
server margins matters less.
Management also pointed to supply constraints in memory components and flagged
near-term margin pressure from AI mix and pricing dynamics. Those are real
near-term headwinds, not dismissible footnotes.
What’s Already in the Price
As of September 3, 2026, market data puts HPE at roughly 13 times forward
earnings. For a company that just raised its fiscal 2027 framework to 13% to
17% revenue growth and EPS of $4.40 to $4.60, that multiple suggests investors
are still treating a meaningful portion of the story as cyclical rather than
durable. Wall Street’s average 12-month analyst price target sits around $67,
with a high estimate around $82, though targets can move quickly after big
reports.
HPE’s fiscal 2027 outlook framework includes revenue growth of 13% to 17% and
EPS of $4.40 to $4.60, reflecting management’s confidence in demand. Management
also indicated a fiscal 2027 free cash flow target of at least $5 billion, and
commentary around the outlook has noted that it excludes potential upside tied
to AMD’s Helios.
The Bottom Line
HPE is not a pure AI server play. That is exactly the point. The server
business is cyclical, subject to hyperscaler capex swings, and competing in a
market where pricing power can be limited. The networking business, now
consolidated with Juniper, runs at 22% operating margins and is positioned to
attach more software and services over time.
The post-earnings dip creates a specific decision: at roughly 13 times forward
earnings, with a record backlog and raised guidance, the risk-reward can still
tilt constructively if networking continues to scale and offset margin
normalization elsewhere. The primary risk is that gross margin moderation in AI
systems proves sharper than management expects, or that Juniper integration
synergies plateau before they fully offset commodity server headwinds. Watch
the next quarter’s networking margin and order conversion. Management said it
expects networking operating margin to improve modestly quarter-over-quarter,
driven by top-line growth and Juniper synergies. If that holds, the thesis
holds.
