Northrop, USAF Seal Deal for New Nuclear Missile

Northrop Grumman on Sept. 8 won a $13.3 billion contract to design a new intercontinental ballistic missile. The contract award ends a fraught competition that saw Boeing, the Air Force's longtime nuclear missile provider, drop out and leave Northrop as the only bidder. Northrop’s design for the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent will replace the 400 nuclear-tipped Minuteman III missiles in silos in Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming. GBSD could ultimately cost $85 billion or more over the next 50 years.
