Roadless Rule Rollback Threatens Midwest’s Last Wild Forests [[link removed] https:/elpc.org/news/trump-administrations-planned-repeal-of-the-roadless-rule-threatens-remaining-midwest-wildlands/]

The Trump administration is threatening to strip protections from nearly 45 million acres of wildlands within our national forests. The protections have been particularly vital in the Midwest, where less than 200,000 acres of roadless land survived the widespread logging of the past two centuries.

From Southern Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest to the Black Hills of South Dakota, from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Indiana’s Hoosier National Forest, these are some of our region’s most cherished wild places. Increased road building and logging is expected to exacerbate wildfire risks and downstream water pollution, as forests lose their natural ability to filter pollutants, exacerbating taxpayer expenses. ELPC is fighting to protect our Midwest forests.

Opposition Builds Against Michigan Dam Sale [[link removed]]

Last month, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel spoke in opposition to Consumers Energy’s proposed dam sale. At a recent public hearing, Mayors, public leaders, and other organizations spoke out at a recent public hearing as well. ELPC is representing Michigan angler and conservation groups against the sale.

EPA Proposal Threatens Public Participation in Clean Air Permitting [[link removed]]

The Clean Air Act requires communities to be notified before a new or expanding industrial facility, like data centers, gets a permit. Now the EPA wants to eliminate these public participation requirements, leaving communities in the dark about air pollution headed their way. ELPC is fighting back and submitted technical comments alongside nationwide environmental and public health groups last week.

President Trump unilaterally renamed Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” turning the old acronym HOMES into SHAME. The lake is a binational treasure and a nonpartisan natural resource, not a political football. Let’s focus on addressing the real problems facing the Great Lakes, by working even harder to actually protect and restore them.
