Today, I’m mourning Gloria Steinem — a trailblazer who spent her life fighting for women to have an equal voice, an equal say, and equal power.
For decades, Gloria’s work and the work we were doing at EMILYs List were part of the same movement: organizing women, expanding our political power, and changing who gets to lead.
Gloria understood something I’ve believed since I founded EMILYs List more than 40 years ago: Women do not have to wait for power to be handed to us. We can build it ourselves.
She changed the way women saw themselves — and the way men saw women. She gave generations of women the confidence to stand up for their rights, while showing millions of men that our families and our communities would be stronger when women were equal partners and participants.
Gloria made the case, over and over again, that women’s equality was not a side issue. It was fundamental to the future of our democracy.
That fight continues today.
I’ve seen firsthand how much can change when women organize, run for office, and demand a seat at the table. And at a moment when our reproductive freedom is under attack and women remain underrepresented at nearly every level of government, that work is as urgent as ever.
And there is so much reason to keep going: Across the country, Democratic pro-choice women are stepping forward to run, lead, and fight for a future in which women have an equal say in the decisions that shape our lives.
