Following the news last week that the U.S. Supreme Court “sided with Trump” in his ongoing efforts to chip away at access to mail-in voting by executive order; it was reported this week by the New York Times that a whistleblower has revealed that the U.S. Postal Service is moving forward with a “secretive, rushed” effort to carry out Trump’s order to exert federal control over mail voting.

This aggressive attack on our voting rights was revealed amid fears that it would lead to “a ‘catastrophic failure’ in the ballot system ahead of this year’s midterm elections,” with millions of voters potentially not receiving their mail-in ballots in a timely manner, or at all. The whistleblower raised concerns that the “slapdash” development of the new system would significantly increase the chance of errors and other failures in the verification process, causing mass voter disenfranchisement.

As Trump and his regime continue their mass disinformation campaign against our election systems, it’s worth noting that he himself has voted by mail in two elections just this year, and approximately one-third of all Americans also vote by mail.

This is another example of how the damage to our democracy has already been done by the Trump regime. With only 2 months until Election Day, Pennsylvanians are already confused about what is law and what is proposed. This in itself will lead to voter suppression this November and beyond. And it’s only going to get worse as the attacks continue in the lead-up to Election Day. That is why we need to be on the ground over the next 2 months to spread the message that Pennsylvanians should carry on and make a plan to vote.

We are under 50 days away from the voter registration deadline on October 19, and it’s essential that we work tirelessly to ensure voters are informed and have what they need to cast their ballots.
