TNR: Texas Has Suspended More Than 1 Million Voters Ahead of Senate Race [[link removed]]

That's no typo, John . Straight from The New Republic:

" Six percent of Texas’s voters—over 1.2 million people—have had their voter registrations suspended, and many might not even know about it. "

We know six percent doesn't seem like a lot, but 1.2 million does . And elections are routinely decided by less than six percentage points .

This is especially critical when Texas's upcoming Senate race is one of the most-watched and forecast as one of the tightest elections this November.

The suspended registrations span the whole state, but also some of Texas’s largest counties, including Dallas County, where more than 129,000 voters are suspended; 56,000 voters in both Collin and Denton counties; and over 73,000 voters in Tarrant County.

What counts as a suspended voter ? In Texas, it means that the voter’s county doesn’t know their address or thinks they’ve moved. It doesn’t necessarily stop people from voting in November’s midterm elections, but it does make the process of voting much more difficult. If a voter shows up on Election Day and their registration is suspended, they have to fill out a “ statement of residence ” form, and if they’ve moved to a new county, they’ll either be required to vote in their old one or be given a provisional ballot , according to The Dallas Morning News .

Just to be clear: The rates of rejection on provisional ballots are substantially higher than mail-in ballots . They are easier to question, easier to challenge and get thrown out, which is why we're trying to reach every eligible voter we can to have their registration verified to be valid for the upcoming election.

There should be no doubt about how scared opponents of voting rights are if they're suddenly willing to go to these new extremes to pick and choose whose vote gets to count in the midterms. Which is why we need to work equally hard to make every voice heard this November.
