Hunger Free America CEO Joined Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to Advocate for a Nationwide Extension of Pandemic-EBT

Last week, Joel Berg joined Senator Kirsten Gillibrand at St. John's Bread and Life food pantry in Brooklyn to support her bill, Ensuring Nutrition for America's Students Act. The bill will provide nutritional resources to families who have lost access to free or reduced-price lunches due to school closures, and would also extend the P-EBT program—which is set to expire on September 30, 2020—through the upcoming school year.
Action Alert: Extend the P-EBT Program

It is essential that the U.S. Senate include additional funding for food programs in the next Covid-19 relief package including an extension of Pandemic-EBT benefits. This program has lifted millions of American children out of hunger during the economic crisis caused by Covid-19. Call your Senator to advocate for an extension of the Pandemic-EBT program through the 2020-2021 school year or sign our online petition ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

Hunger Free America is pleased to report that the USDA changed its stance on school meals waivers and has decided to extend them ([link removed][UNIQID]) through December 31, 2020.

HFA CEO Joel Berg noted, "Parents will now be able to continue picking up meals for their children at one location rather than going to different school sites to pick up a meal for each child. The extension of these waivers is a huge lifeline for hungry families and will help ensure that the number of food insecure children in this country doesn’t continue to rise."

However, more work needs to be done to decrease the number of people who are struggling with food insecurity. Watch Joel's interview with i24 News ([link removed][UNIQID]) to learn more about how the federal government can lessen the effects of the hunger epidemic.
