One of the most gratifying things about this campaign is that people are coming together not just to support or defeat a candidate. They are volunteering their time and money for something greater than that.
In my faith tradition, Jesus famously summed up his teachings into two commandments: love God and love thy neighbor.
“Politics” is just another word for how we treat our neighbors.
When someone volunteers their time or contributes their hard-earned money, they are doing it because they want a safe neighborhood; a well-funded public school; and the ability to see a doctor when they need one — not just for themselves but for others who they may not know or never will.
That is the promise — and the potential — of this campaign. Not just to win a race, but to transform the way people treat their neighbors in Texas and in this country. And we’re doing it together.
The folks we are campaigning against see things differently. They’re trying to tear us down with all kinds of attacks: They’re calling me a vegan, a socialist, a communist. They’re even saying I’m “going to hell.” They will stoke the flames of the culture war to divide us so those at the top can spend millions and millions of dollars to swoop in and buy this election.
There's a chance this will be the most expensive Senate election in the history of this country. The other side has a handful of billionaire mega-donors who can dump obscene amounts of money to tear us down.
Our side has lots and lots of people chipping in a few bucks when they can. And the sad fact is we haven't raised close to what we'll need in order to overcome their spending.
So: as we enter our final quarterly FEC fundraising deadline of the campaign, I am asking everyone who understands the stakes of this election to help out with what they can.
