John,

August used to mean picking out new notebooks, picking the perfect
first-day outfit, and wondering who you’d sit with at lunch.

For an entire generation, that excitement comes mixed with something else:
a quiet, heavy anxiety.

Back-to-school season now comes with bulletproof backpack ads, security
system pitches, and the familiar routine of school shooter drills. We’re
taught where to hide, how to stay silent, and how to block a door before
we’re even taught geometry.

We’ve been conditioned to accept this routine as normal — a culture of
conformity around gun violence. But preparing students for a worst-case
scenario isn't a substitute for keeping them safe in the first place.

When we started March For Our Lives, we refused to accept that this was
just "how things are." We knew that all the policy proposals in the world
wouldn't be enough without a fundamental culture shift around guns in
America.

We’ve already seen what happens when youth-led momentum pushes for real
change. From mobilizing millions of young voters to helping push for the
creation of the federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention, young people
have repeatedly proven that we don't have to settle for the status quo.

We want a future where back-to-school means focusing on learning, growth,
and community — not survival tactics. But building that culture takes
relentless grassroots organizing, youth training, and community resources.

youth-led movement for gun safety?

Thank you for standing with us, believing in young people, and helping us
build a world where our schools are true safe havens.
