John, A whistleblower just confirmed that the USPS has been secretly building software to gut mail-in voting, in direct defiance of a court order blocking Trump’s plan. According to the whistleblower, a project like this normally takes nine months to a year. But this software was built in just a matter of weeks. The system checks ballot barcodes against information uploaded by state election officials. If even just one bad barcode is detected, the entire batch gets rejected—upwards of ten thousand ballots getting rejected at once for each error. This complaint is not shocking. The system is not supposed to work, it is meant to fail on purpose. We all know mail-in ballots lean heavily Democratic. It’s no surprise that the USPS software’s “flaw” just so happens to be mass rejection of ballots over a single error. Democrats have built our entire turnout operation around early and mail-in voting. We identify our voters, we knock on their doors, we call them, we get them to bank their ballot early. Once they vote, we move on to the next name on the list. It’s incredibly effective at boosting turnout. Republicans do the opposite. They wait until Election Day. That is why 2020 produced the "red mirage," Trump's early lead built on in-person votes, before Democrats surged ahead once mail-in ballots got counted. Trump wants to break our best organizing tool and force Democrats to vote in person on Election Day, all while threatening to deploy ICE and the National Guard at polling locations and flooding the polls with over a thousand DOJ "election monitors" to intimidate voters and suppress turnout. There is no doubt what Trump is trying to implement is unconstitutional. But with MAGA extremists controlling the Supreme Court, that may not matter. We just watched them gut the Voting Rights Act. We cannot rely on them saving us here. That’s why Defend Our Courts is preparing an emergency GOTV fund. On top of the budget already set aside for the next two months, we need a sizable reserve on hand so we can adapt our organizing strategy at a moment's notice. We think Democrats everywhere need to be ready for the worst case scenario. Voters don't just need a plan to vote in this election, they need a backup plan too.
