Control of the Senate is in the balance here? ? ? ? ? New research has just come in from Maine ? and it could be our chance to unseat Senator Susan Collins. Control of the Senate could come down to this race, friend.
The challenge in Maine is that the polls show a large number of split-ticket voters ? that is, people planning to vote for Joe Biden (D) and Susan Collins (R).
Trump is unpopular in Maine right now ? most polls have Biden ahead by a decent margin. That said, if enough Biden voters split their ticket and vote for Collins, she could hold onto her seat.
This is where we need your help. We're hoping to launch a massive campaign highlighting Collins' support for Trump's anti-climate, anti-science agenda. Our plan is laser-focused ? we're specifically going hard after these split-ticket voters ? and the research shows our message is working.
Bottom line ? we need your help to go big with this. The absolute best thing you can do right now to help swing this election is make an emergency gift ? every contribution will be triple matched. Even $3 can make a difference ? [link removed]
Here's the thing: A vote for Collins is a vote for Trump at this point. In the past, she's built a reputation as a moderate, but recently has backed Trump on his most important votes. That includes appointing Brett Kavanaugh.
Collins is currently slightly behind Sara Gideon in the polls. Gideon has the potential to be an incredible environmental senator ? she's Maine's Speaker of the House and has helped pass strong legislation protecting air, land, and water in the state.
But resources are still super tight right now. If we go big in Maine to take down Susan Collins, it'd mean scaling back efforts in Iowa and North Carolina ? races that are just as close, where the environmental movement could decide the outcome.
In Iowa, Senator Joni Ernst just made headlines for being a COVID-19 denier ? saying that she was "so skeptical" of the government's official statistics about virus fatalities. She already has a record of denying manmade climate change ? and has an abysmal 3% lifetime score in LCV's National Environmental Scorecard. Vote-by-mail plans in Iowa are underfunded right now as well. Polls currently put the Iowa Senate race as one of the closest in the country.
In North Carolina, Senator Thom Thillis has also denied manmade climate change, even after his state has been devastated by intense hurricanes in recent years ? all while accepting major campaign contributions from corporate polluters. Environmental champion Cal Cunningham is up by only a couple points right now.
Friend ? Maine, Iowa, and North Carolina aren't the only Senate races we're hoping to swing, but if we win all three, we will almost certainly secure an environmental majority in the Senate.
This is our shot. Remove Trump and his enablers, and we're in a real position to advance federal policies that put people most impacted by pollution and climate change ? especially communities of color, Indigenous communities, and low-wealth communities ? at the center of solutions, and leave a livable planet for future generations.
I hope you'll help, if you can ? when everyone pitches in, even small donations like $3 are a big help. Please, donate to LCV Victory Fund today. Your contribution will be tripled ? [link removed]
We can't thank you enough for fighting alongside us during this election. This is our chance ? a real chance ? at finally getting our country on track.
We can do this, friend ? we just have to do it together.
