When I got off active duty and came back home to the great state of Georgia, I quickly realized that despite having thousands of service members in our communities, Georgia is not a veteran-friendly state, between state taxes on military retirement and a healthcare system that treats veterans like an afterthought.

My last assignment was in Israel. I went from leading troops in high-stakes environments to coming back home and experiencing the sudden crash that so many service members face when transitioning back to civilian life.

I knew I needed help, so I called Fort Benning. They directed me to a local mental health facility. I pulled up to that clinic as General Shawn Harris. I walked to the counter, and the receptionist looked right at me and said: "We don't take TRICARE anymore."

I had served 40 years. I had the rank, and I had the phone numbers to call people high up in the chain of command to fix my situation. But what if I was an E-4?

If a young Specialist walked into that clinic without a star on their shoulder or a direct line to a general, they would have been turned away with nowhere to go. Without help, they could have ended up dead.

I walked back out, sat in my car, and thought: This is why I’m getting into politics.

My blood boils when politicians like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth treat our military like a political backdrop or talk about veterans' benefits as something to slash and privatize.

Pete Hegseth and the political class in Washington love to wrap themselves in the flag, but when our service members come home broken, struggling, or needing care, they look the other way. They treat the men and women who put their lives on the line like line items on a spreadsheet instead of human beings who earned their care.

Our troops and veterans don't need political posturing or lectures on culture wars from political appointees—they need a healthcare system that actually answers the phone when they call for help.

I fought for this country for four decades, and I’m not going to sit quietly while politicians neglect the men and women who served alongside me.
