John,

Welcome to your Wednesday roundup.

Parliament is back, and today is a big day for democracy. MPs are debating the Representation of the People Bill, putting questions about votes, money and political power back on the table.

Our latest Ugly Politix article looks at the opportunity Andy Burnham has to make the Bill braver. We’re also celebrating our sixth month of the UK Democracy Lottery - and saying a very big thank you to everyone who supported our August crowdfunder.

** Burnham Promised Change. A Timid Bill Is His First Test.

Andy Burnham did not write the Representation of the People Bill but he now gets to decide what happens to it.

Our latest article looks at the gap between the ambition of a new premiership and the caution built into the Bill he inherited.

Lowering the voting age and strengthening protections against foreign money are welcome. Leaving unlimited political donations and our unfair voting system untouched is much harder to defend.

A timid Bill has met a more ambitious political moment. The next stages are an opportunity to make it braver.

Six months ago, we launched the UK Democracy Lottery as a new way to support us - and, we hoped, a way to give something back to you too.

The response has been fantastic, and we’ve had a few winners along the way. We haven’t had a jackpot winner yet, so you could still be the first.

Every ticket helps fund our work and campaigns, so whatever happens in the draw, democracy wins.

If you haven’t played yet, today is a good day to start. Tickets cost £1, and every ticket gives you the chance to win the £25,000 jackpot or another cash prize.

** Thank you for helping us enter autumn stronger
------------------------------------------------------------

A huge thank you to everyone who donated to or shared our August crowdfunder.

Your response means we go into autumn better equipped to influence the next stages of the Representation of the People Bill and keep pushing for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.

It will help us make the case to decision-makers, reach more people and build public pressure at a crucial point in the campaign.

We asked you to help us make this opportunity count. Thanks to you, we are starting autumn stronger - and ready for what comes next.

All the best,

Cathy Monaghan
