For many Minnesotans, today is the first day back to school.

But back to school looks different this year -- parents, students, teachers, and staff are facing new challenges due to COVID-19. That's why it's more important than ever to affirm our guiding principle:

We must ensure that every American child receives a world-class education -- no matter their race or zip code.

Even without a global pandemic, because of dramatic achievement gaps and declining resources, too many schools are struggling, too many teachers are overly burdened, and too many students are left behind.

We need to support education now more than ever. In honor of the first day of school, recommit with me to supporting teachers, students, and families and fighting for equal opportunity for all our schools.

My plan to revitalize our schools focuses on creating more opportunity for young people, just as I've spent my career doing.

Increasing funding for federal mandates is a top priority when it comes to public education. I'm a cosponsor of the IDEA Full Funding Act, which would fully fund the federal government's portion of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act over a 10-year period.

I also support teacher-preparation programs and other efforts to help recruit more candidates from under-represented communities into the profession. I believe the federal government should support and build upon intensive mentoring programs during new teachers' first years, which will help them succeed and keep more of them in the profession.

Last but not least, I support increased investments in early learning opportunities, as research shows that every dollar invested can yield a return of up to seven dollars. It's important that we close the achievement gap early, so that all kids have the opportunity to succeed.
