When a 13-year-old Syrian refugee girl in Jordan got her first period, she had a lot of questions: What was happening to her body? How should she manage her period? What was normal—and when and where should she ask for help?

Her mother wanted to support her, but knew her daughter needed somewhere she could learn and ask questions without embarrassment. Together, they visited a Women and Girls Safe Space run by UNFPA , the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, where the girl joined a course called "I Change."

There, girls receive practical, age-appropriate information about puberty, menstruation, and self-care. They learn how to use and dispose of period products safely, and who to turn to when they need support.

But just as importantly, they learn that menstruation is a normal part of growing up.

Over time, her mother noticed the difference: Her daughter was more comfortable talking about her period and more confident managing her menstrual health on her own.

During the first half of 2026 alone, 280 women and girls took part in menstrual health sessions at a UNFPA Women and Girls Safe Space in Jordan. Another 120 received vouchers for period products that work for them—sent straight to their cellphones, so each woman and girl can choose for herself.

But menstrual health isn’t just about having pads. It’s about understanding your body. Having the supplies to care for it. Being able to ask questions without shame. And knowing where to turn when you need help.

Emergency funding has kept these services running through the end of November. Without continued investment, access to health information, period products, safe spaces, and care for survivors of violence against women is at risk.
