Samuel Adams

Samuel Adams (1722–1803) – A master of political organization and propaganda, Samuel Adams was instrumental in galvanizing colonial resistance to British rule. He helped organize the Sons of Liberty, the Committees of Correspondence, and the Boston Tea Party. Adams was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a fierce advocate of republican ideals. As a politician and public agitator, he helped nurture the revolutionary spirit in New England and beyond. He believed liberty required constant vigilance.

Adams played a critical role in the famous Boston Tea Party of 1773. As British officials demanded someone be held accountable, Adams remained defiant—refusing to name participants or back down. Though he likely helped orchestrate the event, he insisted that the destruction of the tea was the “last option left” after peaceful protest failed. When royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson demanded repayment for the tea, Adams rallied Bostonians instead, helping spark a wave of resistance across the colonies. His fiery speeches and anonymous writings in local newspapers kept the revolutionary spirit alive while shielding the identities of fellow patriots. John Adams once said Samuel had the gift of “setting the brushwood on fire.” Without his tireless agitation and organizing, the spark of revolution might never have caught flame.
