Friend, the Senate finally returned to session today—25 days after Mitch McConnell sent his Senate colleagues on vacation without making an inch of progress on critical coronavirus relief.
In those 25 days, Kentucky has seen more than 16,866 new COVID-19 cases, over 34,587 new filings for unemployment, all while kids across the commonwealth have been sent back to school—many without a plan or assistance from Congress to ensure their safety. Many more have had to adapt to online learning because Mitch has failed to mitigate this pandemic so kids could return to school in person. It’s been 25 days that Americans faced life-altering unemployment, medical bills, and even eviction notices without help from the leaders who represent them.
Mitch likes to boast about being Senate majority leader, with the power to get things done. The fact is, he couldn’t even shepherd his own allies to pass a bill.
A true leader brings all sides together and charts out a course toward a solution. Instead, Mitch just threw up his hands, took his ball and went home.
I don’t know if anything will change, or if the Senate will get anything done, in the eight weeks before Election Day. What I can promise you is that we’ll spend each and every day holding Mitch accountable for walking off the job.
