We have some good news: we've been given an extension through midnight tonight to raise $6,772 and reach our $10,000 goal for our work in San Juan County. This critical work allows us to invest in the organizers, voters, and local leaders who can help determine what comes next for Bears Ears.

Last month, the Trump administration once again axed the boundaries of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. Their protections were cut by more than 90%, a devastating loss for the cultural and wilderness resources the monuments once encompassed. The news rocked many, but a path to restoration remains. The monuments have been in a similar situation before, and so has Stewardship Utah. If we want to stop bouncing between protections and reductions each time the White House changes hands, we have to build something more durable. That starts with ensuring the communities closest to these lands have the power to shape what happens to them.

Bears Ears sits entirely within San Juan County–Utah’s only majority-Indigenous county. Who represents the county matters greatly. Who votes in each election matters. Whether residents have the tools and opportunity to advocate for themselves matters. That's why, thanks to our grassroots donors like you, Stewardship Utah has spent years registering voters, recruiting community leaders, building basic infrastructure like addressing, and organizing alongside residents on the Utah portion of the Navajo Nation.

After the first reduction of Bears Ears, the Rural Utah Project helped elect the first Navajo-majority San Juan County commission in 2018. That election helped restore protections for Bears Ears when Biden came to office. Just like they had previously advocated for the reduction of Bears Ears, the San Juan County Commission directly guided the restoration once they had an Indigenous majority. We’ve maintained an on-the-ground presence since 2018– building local leadership that reflects San Juan County communities and supports the tribal vision for Bears Ears.

National decisions will continue to have an enormous impact on Bears Ears and Grand Staircase. But local leaders determine whether those who live within the lands meant to be protected have a voice in those decisions. That is exactly why our organizing happens each and every day, not just around elections. Our grassroots donors allow our staff to invest in the future of communities like San Juan County. Our donors help build the local power needed to protect Bears Ears and Grand Staircase for the long haul.

And we have been given an extension to meet our $10,000 goal for this work.
