I hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend! Thank you to all the Tennessee workers who keep our economy moving forward. We are especially grateful for all of our essential workers, such as our teachers, health care workers, grocery store employees, first responders, and many more who have stepped up and risked their health and well-being to provide vital services.
Unfortunately, too many Tennesseans are unemployed and unable to earn a living right now. Thousands of Tennessee workers are struggling to pay rent and put food on the table due to economic challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 818,149 new unemployment claims have been filed in Tennessee since March 15th. From August 23-29th, 196,816 Tennesseans either filed a new claim or re-certified an existing unemployment claim.
Since March, I have been working hard to assist every Tennessean who has reached out to me for help with their unemployment claim. The hundreds of personal stories shared with me every day are absolutely heartbreaking. Now that the FPUC program has expired and our state’s LWA grant has run out, struggling workers are not receiving nearly enough to survive, much less support their families. Please help your friends and neighbors in any way that you can and do your part to help make it possible for our economy to fully reopen as soon as possible. Wear a mask and maintain social distancing in public.
AD HOC COMMITTEE TO STUDY EMERGENCY POWERS
Speaker Sexton appointed me to serve, as one of 12 House members, on a joint ad hoc committee to study the governor’s emergency powers. By all indications, the committee seems to be the Speaker’s attempt to appease members of his supermajority who have taken issue with executive orders issued by Gov. Bill lee during the pandemic. We have met twice over the past month to hear testimony from various persons on the topic, and two more future meetings are scheduled. I suspect there will be legislation introduced in 2021 to seriously limit the governor’s emergency powers and possibly those of the Tennessee Supreme Court.

As you have seen, I-440 re-opened a few months ago. I think it’s fair to say that it’s a much smoother ride. While we were unable to save the grassy median, we were able to successfully get an approximately $500,000 investment in beautification efforts, which includes: 295 trees, 2,623 shrubs, 5,244 groundcover plants, and 4,373 cubic yards of mulch.
