The US does not do labor and unions well. Indeed, before proceeding, it is worth emphasizing that there is a big difference between “labor,” as in all working people, and “Labor” as in the union movement. There are actually fewer union members today in the US than in 1945. At the same time though, even in the US, you can find islands of solidarity, if you look for them.

Recently, during a call with a young black nonprofit leader who called to talk about power (because of my book ([link removed][UNIQID]) and the times we live in), I noticed that like many other leaders of color I talk with now, the greeting is long as he seeks to convey the balance that is staying aloft in joy in a time when things fall apart. “You know, I keep in mind that I am blessed and that we live in a time when nothing makes sense anymore.” That’s how we get to a focus on power, the dominating kind being the root of all that is wrong in the world, including the nonprofit sector.
