Over the weekend, more than a thousand campers were stranded by the Creek Fire in California. They were toldto take shelter in the lake as firefighters struggled to reach them. Approximately 800 were able to be rescued by CalFire.

But more than 200 campers remained trapped by the fast-moving wildfire. They were saved in an outrageously daring helicopter rescue that the crews were warned against attempting.

Here's the incredible story.

As I mentioned in the comments, having lived in wildfire country for five years, seeing smoke in the distance is pretty common - practically a daily occurrence in some areas. I completely understand why the campers were not initially concerned as the fire was about 50 miles away.

We narrowly avoided two wildfires that were 3 miles or less from our home in California and this was a huge part of why we left the state. (And the taxes and the government...but that's another article.)

Let me know what you think of this story - I think the rescue operation was absolutely incredible.
