Diana Harshbarger: Congress Must Address Debt and Government Spending

Kingsport, TN - Today, small business owner and Republican candidate for Tennessee’s First Congressional District, Diana Harshbarger, highlighted the first of several policy priorities she is focused on during her campaign: our growing national debt. The Harshbarger campaign announced actions Diana will take to address our debt and deficit, which she calls “one of our greatest national security threats.”

“Folks in East Tennessee don’t run their families or businesses with unreasonable amounts of debt and don’t write checks they can’t cash, so why does our government spend like they’ve got an unlimited credit card?” Harshbarger continued, “I decided to run for Congress because I want my son and grandsons to have the same opportunity I did growing up. If our debt and spending continue to spiral out of control, we will leave our country in financial ruin that will limit opportunities for future generations. I want to make sure that doesn’t happen to all of our families.”

“A balanced budget amendment will allow our government to rein in the reckless spending and will help provide financial discipline in a place where it’s much needed,” Harshbarger said. “Worst of all, much of this debt is owned by foreign and adversarial nations who are not our friends. We don’t need to be beholden to any foreign nation”

Harshbarger supports exploring a simple amendment with themes similar to the one purposed in the 115th Congress , outlined below:

-      The government cannot spend more than it takes in each year, with spending including all expenditures with the exception of repayment on debt principal.
-      Requiring a 3/5ths rollcall vote of each member of Congress to increase the debt limit.
-      A provision that allows Congress to waive requirements during a time of war or conflict that would play politics with our national security.

“I look forward to working with President Trump and other members of Congress to address this issue. Rest assured, a Democratic-controlled Congress under Nancy Pelosi will never explore solving this problem, as they are more concerned with attacking our president than working for the American people,” Diana concluded.

This is the first in a series of priority policies the Harshbarger campaign will highlight over the next few weeks leading up to the General Election. For more information, visit www.DianaforCongress.com or follow Diana on social media.
