West African Caravan Journeys to World Social Forum in Benin
Peasant farmers from Mali and Burkina Faso, fisherwomen from Guinea, youth environmental activists from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, trade unionists, pastoralists, and informal workers from Senegal – over three hundred people in total, from several West African countries – filled the public squares and university halls of cities across West Africa with songs, testimony, and political debate.
This year’s journey of the West African Caravan for the Right to Land, Water and Peasant Seeds – in its fifth edition – coincided with the 17th World Social Forum (WSF) in Cotonou, Benin. The timing was not incidental. The Caravan was the mobilization.

On their way to the World Social Forum, the caravan made a crucial stop at the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) in Togo, where hundreds of thousands of enslaved people were held kidnapped and chained on their way to the Americas.
For the caravan, memory is part of movement building.

Take Action: Honduras's Garifuna Communities Under Attack
The situation in Honduras is getting heavier by the day, with escalating threats against the lives, land, and territories of the country’s peasant, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous communities by right-wing forces.
In July, five members of the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH) were arrested during a violent eviction in the Garifuna community of San Juan, in the municipality of Tela, on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. While the individuals were released, they are facing criminal charges for “aggravated usurpation” of their own territory. This criminalization is occurring in a context of rising violence against Garifuna communities.
Take action today to pressure the Supreme Court of Honduras to respect the Garifuna people's internationally recognized territorial and human rights.
