“We’re gonna spend $4m this year.”

John,

During my 2017 campaign for the Virginia House of Delegates, I knew I would face a barrage of transphobic attacks while running against Virginia’s author of the “bathroom bill.” What I didn’t expect was how much some people would spend to beat me. One group, The American Principles Project (APP), led the anti-trans charge with their board chairman alone donating $20,000 to my predecessor’s campaign:

And the bad news is: APP is back – and they’re going to be spending even more money in 2020! APP’s executive director even ADMITTED we met their challenge in 2017, tweeting at me: “you out raised your opponent by a 5-1 margin (the LGBT lobby is much better funded than the CR [Christian right].) We’re gonna spend $4m this year.”

As bigoted as their attacks were 2017, they’re doubling down as on their discriminatory message in 2020. Right now, there are Victory-endorsed trans candidates in Colorado, Kansas, Wisconsin and more states who will need help fighting back. Will you make a rush donation to Victory Fund TODAY to stop these bigots in their tracks?

Fortunately, I’m not afraid of them and neither is the Victory Fund. We confronted their bigotry head-on as the Victory Fund helped me raise the money we needed to unseat the self-described “chief homophobe” of Virginia: 54%-46%, allowing me to become the first out-and-seated transgender state legislator in American history.

But now, these anti-LGBTQ groups like APP are going all-in to attack trans kids and our equality champions once again in 2020. Please help fight back by donating $10, $25, $50, $100 or whatever you can to Victory Fund today so our LGBTQ candidates can flip the script on discrimination and win elections across the country.

And there’s even more at stake. According to a recent article from Politico, the Trump administration is on the fence about jumping into the so-called culture war that defines trans peoples’ lives. As if Betsy Devos isn’t part of his administration and dedicated to attacking trans kids hoping to play sports or use the correct bathroom. As if Ben Carson didn’t joke about “big, hairy men” infiltrating women’s shelters. As if the President himself didn’t callously tweet, stripping healthcare from trans service members or rollback our rights in a million different little ways.

There is one silver lining: if this effort fails, we might just send these bigots packing for a couple years:

This is it, friends. Victory Fund candidates must win in 2020. We have to show these bigots we won’t be cowed by their money, and so LGBTQ kids can see themselves as future leaders of our country. Let’s show the world we can lead because of who we are, not despite it. Please contribute to the Victory Fund today and let’s go win everywhere this Nov. 3.

Warmly,

Del. Danica Roem (VA-13)
