As students head back to school, facing greater uncertainty and unrest than perhaps they have ever experienced before, we are reminded of a quote from the great Fred Rogers. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Let us celebrate the countless helpers working to make school, in whatever form, a healthy, happy place to head back to. Below you will find an array of resources and offerings to help parents and educators navigate this year’s unusual transition back to school.

Stay well,

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY:
Elements of Effective Homework
Just in time for the new school year, we have released Quality Over Quantity: Elements of Effective Homework ([link removed]) , an update to our existing homework white paper published in 2012. Before the pandemic, student workload was a source of great stress. Now, remote learning has only intensified the conversation about homework as the lines between home and school have blurred.

This recently published article ([link removed]) highlights key takeaways from the white paper and articulates five guiding questions that educators should consider when designing and assigning homework. Our white paper also includes answers to three homework questions we often hear from parents, including “What should my role be with my child’s homework?”

STUDENT REFLECTIONS DURING THE PANDEMIC:
An Opportunity for Educators to Create a "New" Normal
In this new blog ([link removed] ) , Challenge Success Co-Founder Dr. Denise Pope offers five guiding principles for educators to use as they consider what schools might look like this fall.

"As this challenging academic term begins, and some students are learning remotely, while others are heading back in person, we urge educators to pause and reflect on what worked — and didn’t — during remote learning last spring. While we eagerly await the moment when all schools can safely resume in person, we strongly caution against reverting back to the 'normal' way of doing things. 'Normal' was not working for so many students prior to COVID-19."

A HEALTHY APPROACH TO COLLEGE ADMISSIONS ([link removed])

[link removed]

It is the start of the college admissions season, and because of the pandemic, this year's process holds more uncertainty than usual. We continue to advise that students, and their families, lean into a healthy approach to college admissions, one which focuses on finding the right "fit" college(s) for each student. Download our white paper, A "Fit" Over College Rankings ([link removed]) , and watch this two-minute video ([link removed]) to learn why engagement in college matters more than attending a selective college. We also suggest exploring this tool ([link removed]) , which may help kids narrow in on "fit" and decide what to prioritize in their college search.
Understandably, standardized tests (and the lack of access to them) remain a source of stress for students. The National Association of College Admissions Counseling ([link removed]) maintains a list of colleges that have confirmed test-optional policies this year. In addition, t ([link removed]) his article ([link removed]) explains why students interested in need-based or merit aid should do further outreach to understand requirements for test-optional schools.

Lastly, we encourage both parents and students to read this column, Why Now in College Admissions ([link removed]) , by Brennan Barnard. He offers a healthy framework for shifting away from the negative thinking inherent in this year's college admissions process. It is a good reminder to all of us.
